Want to see how big illustrations go behind-the-scenes?
Clint Cearley here and I'll take you through the creation process of my longest single commission to date -- Aether Revolt for Magic: The Gathering. It was not a standard card illustration but packaging art for the booster box that would be sold in stores nationwide. This is not a timelapse recording of the painting but a "post-game analysis" style of the project. We breakdown my submitted concepts (20+) by discussing their ideas, composition, posing, lighting and narrative. We go over my workflow, seeing how I create the quick black and white concepts and later the color concepts. Time is given to discuss how to handle repeated requested changes that can potentially sap your creative spirit. If you want to see how much time and work is really involved in big projects and pick up some art tips along the way check out Making Aether Revolt.
